Cybersecurity Engineering
Overview
The cybersecurity engineering program provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to design and implement integrated hardware and software cybersecurity systems. Students gain computer engineering and software/hardware-related technical expertise, and graduate with hands-on learning and research experience to solve real-world cybersecurity engineering challenges.
Cyber-physical and hardware aspects of the system are integral part of the curriculum. In addition to the basic hardware, operating system and communication network knowledge, the curriculum also includes:
- Computer forensics
- Reverse engineering
- Cold boot attacks
- Firmware attacks
- Electromagnetic attacks
- Cache attacks
- Power-monitoring attacks
- Differential fault analysis
- Industrial controller (PLC) vulnerabilities
What can I do with a degree in cybersecurity engineering?
Cybersecurity engineering is a rapidly growing field with a significant talent gap between supply and demand.
Graduates of SIUE’s cybersecurity engineering program are prepared for the following careers:
- Cybersecurity Engineer: designing cybersecurity hardware and/or software for a specific company application or broader industry operations
- Cybersecurity Analyst: advising a private, federal, or state organization on how to defend against threats and attacks
Other potential industry employers due to their robust security systems:
- IT
- Infrastructure
- Utilities
- Communications
- Logistics
- Finance
- Data analysis
Hands-on learning
SIUE offers a state-of-the art, self-contained cybersecurity lab that includes multiple servers, networking equipment and workstations. Our students are able to practice the concepts learned in the classroom through embedded experiential learning in small group settings in the lab.
The cybersecurity engineering field offers many research opportunities for undergraduates under faculty guidance.
The SIUE School of Engineering’s partnership with local area communities provides ample opportunities for community engagement, service learning and volunteer program. SIUE is also a member of the Gateway Higher Education Cybersecurity Consortium.
